A SUCCESS STORY – Bella the Belgian Malinois
*** ATTENTION[HEAVY EXCLAMATION MARK SYMBOL]️: This post contains photos of a graphic nature some people might find disturbing.
Bella, the 4-year-old, trained anti-poaching Belgian Malinois.
On the 15th of June 2019, we received a distressing call, Bella had suffered a severe leg injury. Upon her arrival, she left everyone speechless, no one at the practice expected the severity of the injury. However, our veterinarian and the staff stayed calm and proceeded with the utmost care to stabilise Bella.
Bella had suffered a massive degloving wound on her left front leg – a degloving wound is when all the skin has been removed/pulled off, exposing the underling muscle, tendons, blood vessels and nerves. Bella’s wound extended all the way from her elbow, down to her carpus (equivalent to the wrist).
Bella’s wound was cleaned thoroughly and stitched up as best as possible, unfortunately, most of her wound could not be closed as there was no viable skin. This meant numerous surgeries and a possible skin graft for the future.
The long road to recovery begins, Bella required numerous bandage changes several times a week and received laser therapy.
On the 4th of July 2019, Bella underwent a surgical procedure, never performed by the attending vets, to close her severe wound with healthy viable skin. A Bipedicle Flap was done. It is a tedious, time consuming and multistage procedure. A ‘pouch’ or tunnel was created with the skin on the side on Bella’s body. Her wounded leg was fitted into the pouch so that the skin on her side would cover the wound on the leg – this creates a skin flap which is still healthy and constantly supplied with blood. The frustrating part of this procedure is that, for up to 3 weeks, her leg has to be bandaged to her side, so that the skin can attach to the wounded area on the leg. Regular bandage changes were done, as well as more laser therapy sessions.
On the 22nd of July 2019, the skin graft was completely freed from the body, which entailed four surgeries five days apart. This was no time to celebrate just yet, as the body could still reject the skin flap.
Thanks to the dedication from her pet-parents and the efforts from our veterinarians, we are happy to announce that after 6 months of healing, Bella made a full recovery!
She is now sporting a very fluffy ‘sweat-band’ and taking life much easier now-a-days.
