Police say dog charged officer before shooting; neighbors claim mistreatment


A local family thought they were calling Prince George's County Police to come to their defense, but they say officers victimized them and killed their beloved dog instead.

Micah Barlow says early Wednesday morning two men pulled guns and tried to carjack him in his driveway. He got away and says he grabbed a shotgun from the house and began firing to drive off the thugs. A shotgun pellet hit a truck parked nearby.

"We are the victims. I mean, I don't understand it. First of all, I just had a gun pointed at me," said Micah Barlow, Mercedes' owner.

"I called the police and the lady up the street called the police," said neighbor Faye Howell.

Neighbors say when police arrived they treated the people who live there like criminals. Police officials say in tense situations they treat everyone the same until they know who's the bad guy. They also say because Barlow and his brother disobeyed them, the brother now faces a roster of charges and the family dog is dead.

A Prince George's County police officer shot and killed four-year-old Rottweiler mix Mercedes Wednesday. Major Andrew Ellis with the Prince George's County Police says the officer shot the dog when it charged her.

"If the dog's owner had just complied the dog probably would have just sat there happily and there would have been no problem," said Ellis.

Fifty-three-year-old Eddie Martin lives across the street. He came outside when he heard gunshots. Officers ordered him to the ground. He obeyed but believes they continued to treat him like a criminal long after they should have realized he was a bystander.

Martin said, "Some of the police still weren't you know set on doing the correct thing."

Barlow say he would not do anything differently.

"For them to tell us to get on the ground, have guns pointed at us like we was the robbers, I didn't feel the need to get on the ground," said Barlow.

Barlow's brother faces a string of charges including assault, resisting arrest and failure to obey a lawful order.

As far as the men who tried to carjack Barlow, they got away.
