Jullie weten waarschijnlijk allemaal heel goed dat alsmaar meer aussies met epi overal opduiken. Het ASHGI is bezig met een onderzoek financieel te steunen. Die maken heel wat vooruitgang, maar we zijn er nog niet helemaal. Kennen jullie aussies die epi hebben licht dan hun eigenaars in. Breek de stilte, want er wordt heel wat stilgehouden zowel in Europa als in Amerika. Door open over te spreken en het onderzoek te steunen (financieel of met bloedsample's te sturen) kan men misschien binnen de kortste keren een DNA test voor hebben en kunnen we dit echt grotendeels uitroeien.
ASHGI News: Epilepsy Research Update
Dr. Ned Patterson, of the University of Minnesota, and his collaborators now have over 1100 Aussie samples, including about 150 from affected dogs. In his most recent progress report on his AKC Canine Health Foundation grant, which ASHGI supported with your generous donations, Dr. Patterson said, "At this point the most important efforts will be to collect more samples of affected Aussies. Currently we have more than enough unaffected Aussies." So far, the work indicates that we either have a polygenic form of the disease or there is more than one type of epilepsy present in the breed. Dr. Patterson hopes that further work will reveal what genes are responsible. They plan to run a set of 50 affected and 20 control samples on the most recently developed SNP chip, which offers better resolution than the prior chips. SNP chips allow researchers to "read" specific DNA "letters" throughout each dog's DNA. If significant differences are found between the affected and control dogs, the researchers can then look more closely at those specific areas of the genome for genes that may be involved with the disease.
In his report, Dr. Patterson states, "Despite the complexity in Aussies, we are committed to continue to follow through on our search for markers and genes in Aussies as long as funds and new DNA samples are available."
