I am fairly new to the border collie world, bought my first border collie from both working and showlines in 2013. Unfortunately he has passed away on the age of 13 months due to rodenticide poisoning. When I started looking for my next new best friend, I did some basic research on the kennels and the dogs they were breeding. What I saw, was not shocking but remarkable. Breeders advertise with showdogs or working dogs (rarely if ever both) and if you look at the sire they use, you often see the same or similar names. In both the working and the showdogs for that matter.
To me it almost seemed that they were trying to create two different gene pools: one for show, one for working. Both the showers and the workers are making the same mistake: breeding to the 'extreme'. Whether it be extreme in show (prefering show titles and/or specific looks) or extreme in working (trial wins), they limit the amount of genes they use to a few popular sires and dams. In the end you will get extraordinary high COI's with all the health problems that will present themselves with the increasing amount of inbreeding. And what for? Not for the dogs, because they don't care if they win a trial or a show. They are dogs dedicated to their owner who love to work (whether it be show or herding) with their owner. Winning or losing doesn't matter to them. Being cripple, blind or having other genetic health problems does, it limits them in what they can do.
For now it looks like both breeders and owners are not willing to see this. They want their fame, their titles etc. If someone expresses that they might be mistaken in their view, those people are being ridiculed or banned. Because God forbids your opinion differs from the majority...
