PATUXENT RIVER, Maryland (Jan. 31, 2017) - A Military Working Dog (MWD) handler and MWD assigned to NAS Patuxent River patrol a building at NAS Patuxent River Jan. 31 during the Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield 17 exercise. The anti-terrorism/force protection exercise ran from Jan. 30 to Feb. 10 and evaluated both the Navy’s and NAS Patuxent River’s ability to provide an integrated response to an emergency situation.

Archie Dillon O'Connor, a therapy dog at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, is read his retirement citation March 7 during a ceremony in the rotunda of the hospital. Archie has spent seven years in the hospital’s facility dog program, which utilizes dogs to assist in the physical and occupational therapy of wounded service members. De eigen Facebookpagina van politiepup Bumper heeft in een dag tijd al ruim 20.000 vind-ik-leuks.
Op de pagina zijn de avonturen van de politiehond in opleiding te volgen. 
De pup stal de harten van veel Nederlanders met de foto’s en video’s die de politie Rotterdam deelde op haar eigen Facebookpagina.
Zo zagen we onder meer hoe Bumper leert ‘speurneuzen’, hoe hij beetje bij beetje Rotterdam leert kennen en hoe hij kennismaakt met politiepaarden.
De (nu nog) aaibare viervoeter werd zo populair dat de politie besloot hem een eigen pagina te geven.

Nederland valt massaal voor politiepup Bumper

Nederlanders vallen massaal voor de Rotterdamse politiehond-in-opleiding Bumper.
De Facebookpagina van de 14 weken oude herder wist in een week tijd bijna 30.000 likes te vergaren.

14 maart 2017 - Zijn video’s zijn miljoenen keren bekeken en zijn eigen Facebookpagina had binnen een dag 20.000 likes; politiepup Bumper is een ware celebrity.
Metro was dinsdag bij een training van de surveillancehond in opleiding en vroeg zijn instructeur Stephan alles wat jullie over hem wilden weten. 

Wil Drektraan: wanneer is Bumper klaar voor het echte werk?
Gemiddeld duurt dat twee of drie jaar. We gaan ervan uit dat Bumper over twee jaar aan het echte werk kan beginnen, maar het is nog niet zeker dat hij ‘aangenomen’ wordt. Gezien de situaties waar hij in terecht kan komen, moet hij het vereiste niveau wel aankunnen. Dat is ook wat we tijdens de opleiding testen. Maar we verwachten wel dat dat lukt hoor, zijn vader Xantho is namelijk een goede politiehond. We hebben alle vertrouwen in Bumper.

Daniëlle Martina de Koning: hoe zijn jullie op de leuke naam Bumper gekomen?
Die heeft mijn 10-jarige dochter verzonnen! Toen ze hoorde dat we een politiepup in huis zouden krijgen, vroeg ze of zij de naam mocht verzinnen. Dat mocht van mij, zolang ik er maar mee uit de voeten kon bij het geven van commando’s. Geen Fifi of Fluffy, dus. Geen idee hoe ze erop is gekomen, maar ze kwam aanzetten met Bumper.

Esther Oudenalder: mag hij met andere honden spelen als hij straks een echte politiehond is?
Dat ligt eraan. De ene hond kan het beter dan de andere. Vaak zijn politiehonden iets dominanter, maar dat hoeft geen problemen op te leveren. Wij willen natuurlijk ook gewoon met een politiehond over straat kunnen zonder dat hij andere honden bijt of in broekspijpen hangt. Daarom behandelen we hem buiten zijn trainingen om zoveel mogelijk als elke andere hond.

Epootje: Bumper lijkt heel braaf. Heeft hij ook stoute kanten?
Hij is ontzettend braaf, zeker voor zijn leeftijd. Je kunt hem nu vergelijken met een kind van vier. Ik zou ervoor tekenen als mijn dochter ook zo goed luistert, haha! Maar natuurlijk heeft hij ook zijn streken. Laat hem drie uur alleen thuis en hij heeft iets gesloopt. Hij kauwt overal op. En als hij geen zin meer heeft, weigert hij te luisteren. Dat zijn echte puppenstreken die er nog wel uit gaan. We moeten er straks immers van op aankunnen dat hij luistert, zeker in gevaarlijke situaties. Anders lossen we er geen problemen mee op, maar hebben we er eentje bij.
 
Nathsmagic: hoe wordt een politiepup geselecteerd?
De pup moet in het nest al wat enthousiaster en dominanter zijn dan zijn broertjes en zusjes. Meestal kopen we een politiehond aan van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehonden Vereniging, die doet al een soort voorselectie. Verder kijken we naar de bloedlijnen waar al veel politiehonden uit voortgekomen zijn, zoals in het geval van Bumper. We hopen dan dat ze de goede karaktereigenschappen van hun ouders geërfd hebben, zoals moed, werklust en een goede fysieke conditie. 

Karin Leeuw: is Bumper niet te jong voor sommige dingen die hij tijdens zijn opleiding moet doen, zoals de kattenloop en wip?
Daar zijn de meningen kennelijk nogal over verdeeld, maar we weten wat we doen en gaan verantwoordelijk met onze honden om. We gebruiken de methode van Dick Staal voor het opleiden van Bumper en die is al toe te passen vanaf zeven of acht weken oud. Het is lief dat mensen zich zorgen om hem maken, maar Bumper is in goede handen.
